General information

Montefalco Rosso DOC - Cantina Novelli is a wine from Umbria, region of Italy ,Umbria is a region of historic and modern central Italy, bordered by Tuscany to the west, Marche to the east and Lazio to the south. It is partly hilly and partly flat, fertile owing to the valley of the Tiber. The region is named for the Umbri people, an Italic people which was absorbed by the expansion of the Romans. It produces Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Pinot Noir. The wines enjoy high reputation due to the high quality, attracting huge oversea investments. A large number of oenologists were employed as wine consultants. Umbria is famous for white wine, especially for Orvieto, which is regarded as the best Italian white wine. There are two famous DOCG red wine. One is Montefalco made by Sagrantino, deep and powerful. The other is orgiano Rosso Riserva made by Sangiovese, rich and strong.

  • Sangiovese(75%)
also called Niellucciu in France, this grape is native from Italy, the famous Tuscan Sangiovese producing the famous wines of Brunello di Montalcino and Chianti. Sangiovese is the main red grape of Chianti and much of central Italy. This is the most widespread grape variety in Italy. It is also part of the blend of wines from Corsica and Ajaccio, it contributes widely to the reputation of the wines of the appellation Patrimonio. Sangiovese gives a wine high in alcohol, full bodied with some finesse, supporting aging well. In Corsica, it is sometimes vinified in rose wines pleasant to consume, noticable for their frank pink color and fruit. This grape variety develops aromas of apricot, undergrowth berries, jam, spices, stone fruit, currants, violet or peppermint. Also present in California and Argentina.
  • Sagrantino(15%)
  • Merlot(10%)
It is the most representative grape of Bordeaux, covering 60% of the vineyard. It is found mainly in the Libournais, on the "right bank" of the Garonne, especially in Saint Emilion and Pomerol. This grape is easily exportable thanks to its adaptability to different soils. It matures very quickly on gravelly soils, but it is clay soils of Pomerol and Saint-Emilion that fit it best. There, the fruit is expressed all in delicacy, offering floral notes of violet, peony, and of black and red fruits. Among all Bordeaux varieties, Merlot is the one which offers roundness and smoothness to the wine. Over time, these flavors evolve towards undergrowth aromas, marked by mushrooms, truffles, tobacco and even old leather.

The Cantina Novelli is surrounded by vineyards and a secular oak grove, in the splendid hills of Montefalco, within view of cities and towns rich in history and art.

Cantina Novelli’s mission is to recover and promote the native varietals of our region. Those varietals with a long tradition tied to the territory. In this way, Cantina Novelli seeks to become a true ambassador for its area of origin, investing in several research projects, such as the recovery of the extraordinary white grape, Trebbiano Spoletino.
