General information

Trentino Alto Adige

Merlot DOC Trentino - Castel Firmian is a wine from Trentino Alto Adige, region of Italy ,Trentino Alto Adige, the most northern region of Italy is very mountainous and only 15% of the land is arable. The difficulty of raising vines on steep slopes and terraces encourages growers to focus on quality. Nearly three-quarters of production is DOC, and most of the wine is exported. Although experts agree that the Alpine climate favors grapes used for white wines, it has historically focused on red wines which represent nearly two-thirds of regional production. The dominant grape variety in Alto Adige is Schiava, source of light and bright reds that are popular in Germanic countries of the north. The growing demand for white wines has influenced growers to plant more international varieties of premium quality. The heights are favorable to aromatic whites varieties : Sylvaner, Veltliner, Gerwürztraminer, Müller Thurgau and white Moscato.

Merlot DOC Trentino - Castel Firmian is located in Trentino Alto Adige's sub-region of Trentino ,

  • Merlot(100%)
It is the most representative grape of Bordeaux, covering 60% of the vineyard. It is found mainly in the Libournais, on the "right bank" of the Garonne, especially in Saint Emilion and Pomerol. This grape is easily exportable thanks to its adaptability to different soils. It matures very quickly on gravelly soils, but it is clay soils of Pomerol and Saint-Emilion that fit it best. There, the fruit is expressed all in delicacy, offering floral notes of violet, peony, and of black and red fruits. Among all Bordeaux varieties, Merlot is the one which offers roundness and smoothness to the wine. Over time, these flavors evolve towards undergrowth aromas, marked by mushrooms, truffles, tobacco and even old leather.

Castel Firmian lies at the foot of the majestic Italian Dolomites and it's surrounded by a region rich in natural beauty castles history and tradition. Mountain peaks of the Dolomites alternate with plains and natural terraces where vines have been cultivated forever.

Here Castel Firmian cultivates its very own vineyards using the traditional pergola growing system and the modern international espalier system. The particularly varied composition of terrain and the various climatic areas from Sub-Mediterranean to Alpine have allowed the various grape varieties to find their ideal habitat and to reveal the best of their very own natural characteristics. The climate and territory give rise to elegant aromatic and balanced wines.
