General information

South Australia

Penley Estate Kingdom is a wine from South Australia, region of Australia ,The South Australian wine industry is responsible for more than half the production of all Australian wine. South Australia has a vast diversity in geography and climate which allows the state to be able to produce a range of grape varieties from the light Riesling in the Clare Valley to the big, full bodied Shiraz wines of the Barossa Valley.

Since the 1960s, Australia's labeling laws have used an appellation system known as the Australian Geographical Indication (AGI or geographical indication) which distinguishes the geographic origins of the grape. Under these laws, at least 85% of the grapes must be from the region that is designated on the label.
The vineyards of South Australia are classified into several major zones:
-Barossa: Eden Valley, more and more famous for its Rieslings, and Barossa Valley, producing one of the best Shiraz in the world
-Mount Lofty Ranges: Clare Valley, known for its aromatic whites, the coastal and cooler Adelaide Hills, and Adelaide Plains, hot and flat.
-Fleurieu: Currency Creek, Kangaroo Island, Langhorne Creek, McLaren Vale and Southern Fleurieu
-Limestone Coast: Coonawarra, Mount Benson, Mount Gambier, Padthaway, Robe and Wrattonbully.
- The Riverlands: highly irrigated land where a large percentage of Australia's bulk and box wines are produced.
-Southern Flinders Ranges

Coonawarra

Penley Estate Kingdom is located in South Australia's sub-region of Coonawarra ,The Coonawarra wine region is a wine region centred on the town of Coonawarra in the Limestone Coast zone of South Australia. It is known for the Cabernet Sauvignon wines produced on its "terra rossa" soil. Coonawarra is an Aboriginal word meaning "Honeysuckle". It is about 380 km southeast of Adelaide, close to the border with Victoria.

Grape

  • Cabernet Sauvignon(50%)
One of the most cultivated grape variety in the world. Often blended with Merlot and Cabernet Franc, it is grown in nearly every wine producing country, thanks to its hardy constitution. It can be identified by its thick skin and some low yields. In a blend, Cabernet-Sauvignon brings tannins, structure and acidity, which are the keys to a perfect aging process. Californian Nappa Valley has espacially well worked this varietal, which is the main factor of its extrordinary recognition and success. Known for its vegetal flavors such as mint and eucalyptus, Cabernet Sauvignon can turn a wine with herbaceous dominances if harvested too green.
  • Merlot(50%)
It is the most representative grape of Bordeaux, covering 60% of the vineyard. It is found mainly in the Libournais, on the "right bank" of the Garonne, especially in Saint Emilion and Pomerol. This grape is easily exportable thanks to its adaptability to different soils. It matures very quickly on gravelly soils, but it is clay soils of Pomerol and Saint-Emilion that fit it best. There, the fruit is expressed all in delicacy, offering floral notes of violet, peony, and of black and red fruits. Among all Bordeaux varieties, Merlot is the one which offers roundness and smoothness to the wine. Over time, these flavors evolve towards undergrowth aromas, marked by mushrooms, truffles, tobacco and even old leather.

Owner

Penley Estate is located in the heart of Australia's greatest Cabernet wine region: Coonawarra. Established in 1988 by Kym Tolley,a direct descendant of the pioneering Penfold and Tolley winemaking families,Coonawarra's famed Terra Rossa soils were selected for their ability to produce terroir-driven wines of true regional character. The Estate is now widely regarded as one of the region's leading producers.

Vineyard

Dark purple. Pungent, seductively perfumed scents of ripe blackberry, vanilla, pipe tobacco, candied rose and woodsmoke. Deep, supple and sweet on the palate, offering sappy black and blue fruit flavors accented by black pepper and licorice nuances. Broad, rich, energetic blend, with supple tannins providing focus and grip to the persistent finish.
